How to Select the Best Ski Jacket for Skiing in Cold Weather

The first thing that I would look for in a ski jacket is one with a very heavy Nylon outer fabric.  For all the movement while skiing you must have a rugged durable outer shell.  It should be tightly woven as well because it is the first defense against wind.  Next I would check whether this fabric is coated on the inside with a waterproof  breathable coating.  Breathable:  It allows moisture from perspiration to escape.  Waterproof:  water that builds-up on the outside of the jacket from melted snow or rain, etc. does not penetrate the fabric.  Read the labels to see if the seams are also sealed from moisture.  Seam-sealing is preferred especially for wetter snow.

Depending on the conditions that you will be skiing in, look for a ski jacket with a hood and with cinch tabs, velcro and/or snaps to close-down the jacket hood and neckline to penetration of wind and weather.  The waistline should also have some type o closure to block wind.  this would be elastic, snaps and velcro or some combination of these.  The sleeve similarly should close with elastic and also velcro.

The interior of the jacket should have insulation, unless it is a shell-jacket intended to be worn over another insulating layer such as Polartec or fleece. See Hot Chillys Cabo Fleece The insulation can consist of fleece, quilted down or polyester batting.  Read the labels regarding polyester batting.  Although not absolutely necessary depending on your budget, the best ski jackets use polyester batting or fleece fabrics that wick moisture really well. Actually the shape of the fibers of polyester aids in the wicking.

Sometimes the insulating layer of the ski jacket is removable.  It zips in or out so that it can be removed for warmer weather or afternoon skiing.

Last look at the extras that the ski jacket provides - pockets with zippers are very important and it is best if some of them are easily accessible while riding the ski lift. Some jackets have vents. Usually these un-zip to allow air into the jacket temporarily to remove moist air from perspiration and to cool down an overheated jacket. The Top Ski Jackets have numerous zipper pockets and vents to increase their fucntionality and your comfort while skiing.
